Mr. Russell L. Bonasso, age 92, of Clarksburg, WV, passed away on Sunday, July 7, 2019 at the West Virginia Veterans Nursing Facility in Clarksburg. He was born May 27, 1927 at Wyatt, WV (Eagle District), a son of the late Louis and Flora (Morasco) Bonasso. He spent his youthful years in Wyatt, and was educated in the Harrison Co. school system, graduating from Shinnston High School in 1945 and later attended Salem College.

On January 2, 1949 Mr. Bonasso married Elizabeth Ann Minutelli. They were the parents of one son, Michael L. Bonasso who currently resides at Cleveland, OH with wife Patricia Sadar; one brother, Robert A. Bonasso and family of Beaver Creek, OH; a special nephew and niece, David Carney of Bridgeport and Lisa Holyfield of Clarksburg; as well as many other nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents Mr. Bonasso was preceded in death by one sister, Lucille Bonasso Wilson; and one brother, Frank Bonasso.
Mr. Bonasso served in World War II as an Air Traffic Controller and Approach Control Operator in the Carribbean Theatre of Operations and was honorably discharged in December 1947. He then resumed his career with the Wheeling News Publishing Co. as Program Director at radio station WBLK in Clarksburg for three years; leaving the position to begin a career with the U.S. Government as an Admission Clerk at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in 1950. He served in many administrative capacities rising to the position of Administrative Assistant to both the hospital director and chief of staff. Mr. Bonasso was selected for singular honor as a member of the systematic external review program (SERP) in the veteran’s administration which was responsible to survey various hospitals nationwide in compliance, accuracy, and implementation of VA policies and procedures.
Mr. Bonasso retired from the federal government in 1987, at which time he accepted a position as Division Manager of Advantage Capital Corporation, where he retired in December 2008.
Family and friends will be received at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home 329 E. Main Street Clarksburg, WV, on Tuesday, July 9, 2019 from 4 until 8pm. A Prayer Vigil will begin at 7:30 to conclude the visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 10, 2019 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at 10am with Rev. Father Casey Mahone as Celebrant. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, where full military honors will be accorded.
