Mrs. Wanda Phyllis Marple Layfield, age 77, of Rt. 4, Box 210, (Sardis) Clarksburg, WV, passed away at her residence with her care givers at her side, her son, Donald Layfield & Janice Henrey, his companion. Wanda was born April 15, 1933 in Harrison County, WV , a daughter of the late Harold “Mike” Marple and Dora M. Alkire Marple.
Wanda lost her Mom when she was 15 years old. At the age of 19, on June 7, 1952 she married her husband of nearly 53 years, Denver Ray Layfield, who preceded her in death June 2, 2005. They made their home up Catfish Hollow, Sardis, with their three children.
Surviving are two sons, Donald “Donnie” Layfield & his companion, Janice Henrey and Terry Layfield & his wife, Sarah all of Sardis and daughter, Diann Bartlett & husband Don, Meadland Community, Taylor County, WV. Also surviving are her dearly loved seven grandchildren, Terry R. Layfield II & wife, Kristen, Bryan D. Layfield, Melissa D. Layfield, A. Chad Layfield & companion, Keri Allman, Sgt. Casey D. Layfield & wife, Shelby, & Kimberly Bartlett & her companion, Andrew Ramsey , her great grandson, Brayden Thomas Layfield, her sister, Helen Wyckoff of Burlington, NC, two sisters-in-law, Beatrice Marple & Joetta Marple, many nieces & nephews and her very special four legged baby girl, Riley.
Wanda was also preceded in death by two brothers, Delbert “John” Marple & Richard “Dick” Marple & a sister, Ruth Baxter.
When growing up Wanda attend Quiet Dell Elementary School & Roosevelt Wilson High School. After their children were in school, Wanda went to work as a glass packer for Harvey Industries, a local glass company, after working for 20 years in the factory, it shut down. She then went to work as a cook for the Harrison County Board of Education, where she remained until she retired in 2004 from Wilsonburg Elementary School. An avid gardener, she enjoyed canning & making homemade applesauce from her apple trees. She looked forward to the Layfield family reunions and loved taking her sister, Helen with her. Wanda lost her best friend of 50 years, Anna Bunnell in May of 2009, with whom she spent many great times together raising their families. Wanda, a beloved wife, mother, sister & grandmother will be greatly missed by her family & friends. Friends may call at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main Street, Clarksburg from 2:00 - 8:00 P.M. Friday, where a funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at 11:00 A. M. with Mark Beall presiding. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
