Obituary for Donald Gaines

Donald Ray Gaines, age 80, of Sardis, WV, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, August 30, 2018 as a result of a sudden pulmonary embolism. He was born on June 23, 1938 in Clarksburg, the middle son of the late Samuel and Tessie Gaines.

Donald was also preceded in death by his older brother Robert, daughter-in-law Lisa Gaines, and nephew Terry Lee Gaines.

Don is survived by his wife of 59 years, Glenda (Mitchell) Gaines; two sons: Sherman Gaines (Lori) of North Carolina, and Donald Gaines of Sardis; grandchildren: Scott Gaines (Amanda) of Wilsonburg, Ryan Ashcraft (Sheena) of Flemington, Meghan Moore (Louie) of New Milton, and Felicia McCauley (Matt) of West Union; nine great-grandchildren: Shaine Gaines (Lexus) of Wolf Summit, Scott Gaines of Wilsonburg, Meranda Gaines of Wilsonburg, Rydar Moore of New Milton, Rigley Moore of New Milton, Ryela Moore of New Milton, Bentley Martin of Flemington, and Azarel McCauley of West Union. Also surviving are several beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Don attended Bridgeport High School until he and his brother Robert decided to join the Army in 1956, where they both served their country proudly. Coming out of the service, Don continued his working career as a coal truck driver for Erskine Nunn. Following that he drove cement mixer for Consolidated Supply. After moving his family to Sardis in 1965, he met neighbor Robert Moore who was instrumental in his acquiring a position as probationary lineman at Harrison Rural Electric Association where he advanced over 34 years to the position of Line Foreman. He held this position until his retirement in 1998.

Through the years Don was a very active member of Mt Hope Church in Katy Lick. He served as Superintendent, Trustee, Electrician, Grounds Keeper, as well as partaking in any and all projects of the Church. He was a member and President of the Sardis Community Council. He was also instrumental in the building of the new Community Center. Don was an active member of the Sardis Senior Citizens.

Don was the kind of man who continually went above and beyond when it came to helping others. He always found time to help a friend or even a stranger in need. Don loved his Lord, his wife, his family, and his friends with an open heart and helping hand. His favorite pastime was being in the woods deer hunting with younger brother Mike, son Sherman, and grandson Scott. One of his “extended” grandsons Chris, once gave him the highest compliment by saying “Grandpa is a “simple” man. He does what he does for others out of the goodness of his heart and will not accept any accolades for coming to the aide of others.”

Donald’s wishes for cremation will be honored. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at 11am at the Mt Hope Church in Katy Lick with Pastor Dana Lanham presiding. Inurnment will follow at the Plant Cemetery. Online condolences, The Davis-Weaver Funeral Home is honored to serve the Gaines Family during this time.
