John Paul Varkonda, 70, of Salem, WV, passed away on Friday, December 22, 2017 at the WVU Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. He was born in Clarksburg on April 26, 1947, a son of the late John Paul Varkonda Sr. and Elizabeth Ann “Libby” (Libicer) Varkonda Post. John is survived by his wife of 48 years, Linda J. (Davisson) Varkonda, whom he married on June 28, 1969.
In addition to his wife John is survived by two children: John Edward “Johnny” Varkonda of Salem, and Cheri Lynn Gonzalez and husband Adam of Clarksburg; one sister Cynthia Claprood and husband David of Bridgeport; two grandchildren: Oliver Gonzalez and Ivan Gonzalez who was the absolute light of his life; a very special niece who was like a granddaughter Bryanna “Peachie Pie” Fisher of Clarksburg. John is also survived by numerous brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws and nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents John was preceded in death by one brother Robert Varkonda and one nephew Brian Varkonda.
John was a 1965 graduate of Roosevelt-Wilson High School, was Catholic by faith, and served in the Army National Guard for six years. He began his career as a loan officer with Lowndes Bank, and later worked in car sales for many years as well as real estate sales for a brief time. In his younger years John loved drag racing with his brother. John liked watching sports, especially WVU football. He also loved the outdoors, especially making camp fires and relaxing on the family farm.

Main Street Clarksburg, WV for a Celebration of John’s Life on Thursday, December 28, 2017 from 10am until 11am at which time a Memorial Service will begin with Pastor Fred Aves presiding.
